Specification:

We synthesise and supply osmium tetroxide (OsO4) which is predominantly used in electron microscopy as a stain to add contrast to digitally scanned images. There is currently significant research on new applications such as cancer treatments.
OsO4 can be supplied in concentrated powder or concentrated solutions.

Application:

In the electronics industry, octafluorocyclobutane is mixed with oxygen and used as a plasma etching material for SiO2 layers in semiconductor applications, as oxides are selectively etched versus their metal substrates.

In medicine, octafluorocyclobutane may compose the gas cores of microbubble contrast agents used in contrast-enhanced ultrasound. octafluorocyclobutane microbubbles reflects sound waves well and are used to improve the ultrasound signal backscatter. It is also used in pars plana vitrectomy procedures where a retina hole or tear is repaired. The gas acts to provide a long-term tamponade, or plug, of a retinal hole/tear and allows re-attachment of the retina to occur over the following several days post-op.

Under the name C318, octafluorocyclobutane is used in other industries as a component of refrigeration mixtures.
In the production of semiconductor materials and devices, octafluorocyclobutane serves as a deposition gas and etchant.
It has also been investigated as a refrigerant in specialised applications, as a replacement for ozone depleting chlorofluorocarbon refrigerants. Exploiting its volatility and chemical inertness, octafluorocyclobutane may be found in some aerosolized foods. It is listed by the Codex Alimentarius under number 946 (E946 for EU). It is investigated as a possible replacement for sulfur hexafluoride as a dielectric gas.
